Started in 1861 Crown Oaks day has seen many a race and many a punter but has always offered an unforgettable experience. In 1962 the very popular Fashions on the Field competition was borne and, already then, also known as Ladies day, for its fashion shows and attention to outfit, this festival continues to this day to encourage all the women folk to dress up and compare fashion styles. An opportunity for both the ladies and the gents… With the prizes that are up for grabs though, these fashion competitions can be serious winners and even the racing at times takes the back seat.
Averaging over 100,000 race goers and as one of the fastest growing attractions of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, Crown Oaks day has demonstrated time and time again why it is a day not to be missed! Rummy how many players. Attracting all Australian punters with its massive $1 million purse as well as the famous 2500m Group 1 race, a tough, rough and filly fueled race. With set weight limits and conditions the races are always nail biters and the keen punter, or least distracted by all the glamorous fashion, could be a big winner!
With an overall 9 races throughout the day punters will have ample opportunities as well as great betting varieties. The favourite, and aforementioned, 2500m Group 1 race is a heated and wildly anticipated race with strong 3 year fillies that run valiantly and produce exciting competition and odds. Additionally to these fantastic races, punters who wait for Crown Oaks day betting have an underlying advantage. Since the event occurs three days in from the beginning of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, tactical punters can use the time to observe the horses and previous races and perhaps learn a few tilting secrets and horse betting tips before they log on to Australia’s best online sports betting sites.

The Epsom Derby meeting returns at the beginning of June and we can look forward to two days of fantastic racing, and hopefully profitable betting!
On Friday 1st June there will be two Group 1 races to look forward to, with the Coronation Cup (unless the renamed Diamond Jubilee Cup is moved to Derby Day) preceding the Investec Oak, the biggest race on Epsom’s traditional Ladies day. The following day, the Saturday, is the big one though for punters – it’s Derby day once again and if the Group 1 Investec Derby, ranked as arguably greatest flat race on earth, is good enough for the Queen as part of her birthday celebrations then its good enough for our betting and spectating. Here’s a quick guide to the three Group 1 races I’ve mentioned with a look at probable contenders and the history of the races – keep checking back though because we’ll have full racing betting previews closer to the meeting itself.
The 2012 Investec Coronation Cup
The first Group 1 of the Epsom meeting is the Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup in the third race on the Friday and is an opportunity for punters to try and win some early money before the Oaks later in the day. The race is for top quality older horses at 4 years and up, and run over the same one mile, four furlong and 10 yard course as the more illustrious Oaks later in the way. For these reasons it has often attracted the previous year’s successful Derby runners of both sexes and 2010 was no different with Aidan O’Brien’s Fame and Glory, 2nd in the 2009 Derby, taking the victory. O’Brien has in fact won 5 out of the last 7 editions of the £250,000 winning prize money race including with Yeats in 2005 and last year with St. Nicholas Abbey in a thrilling final furlong. That horse went off an evens favourite in a race with only 5 runners – this year there are likely to be a few more with an outstanding list of 30 horses entered to date.
Both Fame and Glory and St. Nicholas Abbey are included on that list along with a further 7 O’Brien trained horses – the pick of those is potentially So You Think with a total eight Group 1 victories, or last year’s Derby runner up Treasure Beach (who finished fourth in the Dubai Sheema Classic already in his first race this year). However, whichever of those horses is there at the start, they are potentially likely to face stiff competition from Circus Des Aigles and Monterosso in the betting – both horses have already won in Group 1 races in Dubai this year with Circus Des Aigles taking the Dubai Sheema Classic, again edging out St. Nicholas Abbey as he did in November’s Breeder’s Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. Monterosso also stated his intentions for the season by taking victory by three lengths in the Dubai World Cup, the World’s richest race, beating So You Think in to fourth, and add leading owner Khalid Abdullah’s horses Sea Moon and World Domination into the mix and we have ourselves a very exciting race.
The 2012 Epsom Investec Oaks
The Oaks is the feature race on Day One and is actually a year older than the following day’s Derby – the purse for this one is a generous £375,000 and with a larger field offers greater opportunity to pick a longer odds winner. Last year’s winner, Dancing Rain under Johnny Murtagh, was a 20/1 shot at the start of the race and it was a slightly strange result as none of the top three were winners as 2 year olds. This year the early betting, before the traditional trial races, is equally open and as a result equally difficult to pick a winner.
Maybe is a joint favourite with Paddy Power in the antepost betting but the 6/1 on offer might be a little short at this stage. I think whether you take the unbeaten filly, who already won in Group 1 company at Curragh last August, depends on how you see her performing in the 1000 Guineas, the season’s first classic on the 6th May. If she lives up to her billing as 2/1 favourite to win at Newmarket then the odds are likely to plummet and so it might just be worth the risk to back her now.

Another Aidan O’Brien trained horse (along with Maybe) is the current joint 6/1 favourite Wading – this filly is possibly the better stayer of the two and if Maybe doesn’t handle the mile O’Brien has a quality horse to come through. An impressive winner of the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes as a juvenile you may want to take the 7/1 on offer in the Guineas before backing her for Oaks success. Lyric of Light for Godolphin and trained by Zarooni, and Kissed for Aidan O’Brien come next for the Oaks betting at 12/1 – Lyric of Light won a Group 1 at Newmarket in September and is likely to run in the 1000 Guineas for which she is currently third favourite. Kissed, as well as Was (20/1), are more unknown quantities having both only secured one victory each in their maiden races as to year olds – they both did so impressively though and it is clear the Ballydoyle production line is working wonders. It will be interesting to see which horses run, and perform, in the Guineas and then the Oaks but an O’Brien winner looks on the cards in both – one outside should for the Oaks though is The Fugue who I have seen people backing as an outside 25/1 shot after an imposing victory in the Rowley mile, she runs in the 1000 Guineas and can also be backed at 25/1 with Paddy Power in that race.
